March of 1980, Pat (my wife) asked me what I wanted to do for my
birthday which was on the 20th. I said, go to a Koi and
Goldfish Club meeting! She said, WHAT!?!! We had been raising tropical
fish and Fancy Goldfish for years. I had bought a couple of Koi USA
magazines and now living in Portland area, saw there was a club called
the NW Koi and Goldfish
(now ZNA NW Chapter). I was curious and wanted to see what it was all
about. We went to our first meeting, joined that night, and was asked to
oversee awards for our up coming show in June!! That is how it all
started.
Built our first pond in 1981, elected President in
1982 and in 1984 was a founding member of the Pacific NW Koi Clubs
Association (PNKCA) and elected Vice Chairman. Over the years I have
held numerous positions in our Club, PNKCA, ZNA and AKCA. Became a Local
Certified ZNA Koi Judge in 1996 and Certified AKCA Koi Judge in 1997.
Now a Senior Koi Judge I have had the honors of judging over 100 shows
nationally and internationally.
Our current dream pond (27k gallons) with Japanese
landscaping, was completed in 2010 as a Memorial to our parents, who
loved koi also. We are proud to display many Champions to fellow
hobbyists.
Now retired and being in Koi for so many years, many
of our closet friends are ones we have meet through this wonderful
hobby.
My other hobbies are tinkering
with and showing 2, 1972 Corvettes. As well as
Building
and flying Kites at festivals.
In closing, I am very honored to have been asked to
judge your show this weekend, my best to all of you…
